Sustainability

Sustainable IT, and net zero by 2040

Good IT should go hand in hand with responsibility: to our clients, our people, our communities and the planet. We help organisations run more efficiently, cut cost, secure their systems and build IT strategies that keep working in the long run, and we hold ourselves to the same standard.

We have committed to net zero emissions by 2040, a decade ahead of the UK’s 2050 goal. The target covers Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, in line with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and it is our contribution to keeping climate change below 1.5°C.

  • Net zero by 2040
  • Scope 1, 2 and 3
  • SBTi aligned
  • Seven UN SDG priorities
  • 2024 emissions baseline set

Our priorities

Seven priorities, chosen from the seventeen UN goals

We picked seven of the seventeen UN Sustainable Development Goals as the ones an IT company of our size can genuinely move, across the three areas of environmental, social and governance. Everything on this page maps back to one of them.

  • SDG 1 No poverty
  • SDG 3 Good health and wellbeing
  • SDG 4 Quality education
  • SDG 5 Gender equality
  • SDG 8 Decent work and economic growth
  • SDG 9 Industry, innovation and infrastructure
  • SDG 13 Climate action
Environment

Net zero by 2040, one step at a time

We are not claiming to have it all worked out. We have a clear plan and we are taking real action, starting with the areas we control and pushing into the ones we can influence. Net zero by 2040 is a full decade ahead of the UK government’s 2050 goal, and it is a roadmap that touches every part of how we operate, not an aspiration on a poster.

Our services play a part too. Secure, well governed cloud and data services help our clients cut their own footprint, which is our contribution to SDG 9 and SDG 13.

Scope 1, 2 and 3: where we have started

  • 2024 baseline. Our emissions baseline is set, so every reduction from here is measured against a real number rather than a guess.
  • Green-powered cloud. Partnering with cloud providers that run on renewable energy for the platforms we and our clients depend on.
  • A smaller digital footprint. Going paperless and trimming the storage, compute and email sprawl that quietly burns energy.
  • Forty percent less travel. Remote collaboration as the default has cut our travel-related emissions by 40%, the single biggest reduction we have made so far.
  • Hybrid working. Fewer commutes, without the service to clients changing.
  • An electric fleet. Transitioning our vehicles to electric as leases come up.
  • Suppliers on the same journey. Engaging our supply chain to reduce emissions across the wider value chain, which is the harder part of Scope 3.
  • Read the full plan. The detail, the numbers and the timeline are published in our Carbon Reduction Plan. Our Carbon Reduction Plan
People and community

Good to work with, and good to work for

Sustainability is not only about the environment. It is about people: opportunities to develop, looking after wellbeing, and supporting the communities we are part of. Our social commitments map to UN goals 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9 and 10. Click a panel.

  • 01

    Diversity and inclusion

Fair access, real representation, and a workplace where everyone can contribute and be heard. It is the right thing to do and it makes the work better.
  • 02

    Talent and development

Continuous learning, mentoring and career progression for everyone on the team, because better teams build better outcomes for the clients they look after.
  • 03

    Health and wellbeing

Physical, mental and digital wellbeing all matter. The team has the tools, the flexibility and the support to stay well, not just to stay busy.
  • 04

    Giving back

Our engineers run Robots in Schools workshops, the team supports local initiatives, and everyone has dedicated volunteer days for the causes that matter to them.

On a similar journey? Let's talk about sustainable IT

This is not a side initiative, it is part of how we operate: the clients we support, the tools we choose and the way we run our own estate. If you are working towards the same thing through sustainable IT, cloud transformation or managed services, we can help with action rather than ambition.
